8
growing up
It had been three days since Lucas fainted in the front room.
Lucy paced back and forth, in front of his bedroom door, while John and Tali were in the kitchen making breakfast.
“Can I see Lucas now?” she called towards the kitchen.
“COME IN!” replied Lucas, shouting from inside his bedroom. “I’M AWAKE.”
Lucas was still unable to walk without help, but he was ready to go out and play.
Lucy slowly opened his bedroom door, peeking her head inside.
“Can you come out and play? Today is Saturday.” she whispered. “You have been in here for three days!”
Lucas slowly sat up in his bed, allowing Lucy to see exactly what the tree water did to his body.
Lucy covered her mouth, trying not to scream.
“How did that happen?” she asked. “You grew!”
“Not enough!” he replied.
“But you are twice the size you were three days ago.”
Lucas lifted up his right hand and looked at it. He was beginning to feel excited about having longer arms, and legs.
“John told me that I am 28 inches now. But, I am still not as tall as you!” he said, trying not to act excited.
Lucy sat down on the bed next to him, putting her hand out next to his hand. He was still half her height, but his hands were the same size.
“That’s impossible!” she said, pulling away her hand.
Lucas smiled and pulled the blankets down, exposing his feet.
“My feet are much bigger too!” he said, then putting his hands behind his ears to move them.
“Look at these!” he said.
Lucy giggled.
“How do they look?” he asked.
“Still big for your size, just like your hands and feet! Just bigger and goofier.” she replied.
Lucas started laughing, nervously.
“I am starving.” he said, rubbing his tummy.
“Get up, let’s go eat!” she replied. “First, let’s see exactly how tall you are.”
Lucas was still a little dizzy, so he carefully climbed out of bed and stood back to back with Lucy.
John came walking in as they were standing together.
“Look who’s awake!” he cheerfully interrupted. “And look how much you have grown!”
Lucas had the biggest smile on his face.
He looked down at the ground and was excited to see that it was much farther away.
“How did this happen?” he asked.
John walked over and sat on the bed. He was all dressed up and ready to go somewhere important. His face was clean shaved, leaving only his well-dressed beard.
“It was the water!” he replied.
“Is it magic?” asked Lucas.
“No.” replied John. “Magic comes from darkness, and what happened to you three days ago, came from pure light!”
“Can I drink more to keep growing?”
“The water was given to you by the Old Hara tree. Only she can decide if you are ready.” explained John.
“How will I know if I am ready?” asked Lucas.
“We will go visit the Temple Garden, next week, and you can find out more when we get there.” he explained.
“Will I learn more about my life as well?” asked Lucy.
John stood up, getting ready to leave.
“I am sure you will.” he replied.
Tali came into the room to invite the kids into the kitchen for breakfast.
“What do we have here?” she asked, noticing a much taller Lucas.
Lucas was still smiling.
“I’m much taller!” he replied.
Tali walked over and kneeled in front of him.
“If you keep this up, you will be taller than your dad before he gets back from his trip to San Francisco.” she said.
“I hope so!” replied Lucas.
Lucas looked up at John.
“Why are you going to San Francisco?” he asked.
“I have been summoned by the President of the United States!”
“The new one?” asked Lucy.
“Yes!” he replied.
“I think she is great!” exclaimed Lucy.
“I hope so.” replied John.
After giving everyone a hug, John was gone.
“I bet you guys are starving.” said Tali. “Let’s go eat some breakfast!”
“Good idea, I’m starving!” Lucas replied.
