Chapter  1

moving day

Lucy gently knocked on the bedroom door.
“Time to get up!” she called.
Lucas pulled the bed sheet over his head and rolled over, trying to go back to sleep.
Thump-Thump-Thump.
Lucy knocked harder on the door.
“Today is the day, we are MOVING!” she shouted, cheerfully.
Lucas sat up in his bed, feeling a little grouchy.
“Go away!” he yelled back.
Lucy opened the door just enough to peek inside.
“Sorry!  Mom says that we leave in an hour!” she said with a softer voice.
Lucas looked over at his clock and it said 7:15 a.m.
“Okay, okay, I will get ready.” Said Lucas.
He waited until the sound of Lucy’s footsteps were further down the hall, then he slowly climbed out of his bed.
Do we really need to move?  Lucas thought.
The fear of moving to a new home was new to Lucas, and his sister Lucy seemed excited to go.
How bad could it be? He thought.
He walked over to his bedroom window, and pulled the curtain open, taking one last look at the back yard he was leaving.
“I’m going to miss this place!” he mumbled to himself.
The wind was blowing and as Lucas watched the leaves on the tree shimmer, almost waving goodbye.
Tap-Tap-Tap.
It was his dad, knocking on the door.
“Hey little buddy!” John called, pushing the door open. “May I come in?”
Lucas quickly wiped away his tears.
“Sure dad!” he replied.
“Are you feeling okay?” asked John.
“I don’t know!” said Lucas. “I feel good and bad, but mostly curious about  where we are going.”
Lucas picked up his shoebox full of knick-knacks, and started casually moving things around.
“I am going to miss all of my favorite things.” he said.
John walked over in front of Lucas, kneeling low enough to look tiny Lucas, right in the eyes.
“You can bring everything you have, except the house.” John said, cheerfully.
Lucas smiled back at him, as he walked over to the wall near his closet.  He pointed at lines on the wall, drawn every time Lucas had grown an inch.
“How can we take these lines? It shows how tall I was!  asked Lucas.
John started to laugh.
“We can’t take the wall either, it’s part of the house. You have been a foot tall since your sixth birthday.  I will take a picture and put it in the photo album?”  John explained.
“I am thirteen inches tall!” said Lucas. “A foot tall would only be twelve.”
“You’re right!” replied John.  “I bet you will be even taller than I am, one of these days.”
Lucas shrugged his shoulders.
“Maybe in another life!” said Lucas.
John walked over and sat on the edge of Lucas’s bed.
“I have a feeling, it may be sooner than you think!” John replied.
“What is the new house like?” Lucas asked.
John clapped his hands together.
“Just the question I was waiting for.” he replied.
Lucas ran over and climbed up next to John on the bed, ready for another one of his amazing adventure stories.  This time it was going to be about their new home.
“For starters, we will have a view of Mt. Whitney from the living room.” he said.
“What’s so special about that?” asked Lucas.
“Mt. Whitney is over 14,000 feet high.” John said cheerfully.
Lucas was beginning to feel impressed.
“Can we go to the top?” he asked.
“As soon as you are ready.” John replied.
“What does it look like?” asked Lucas.
He could feel the fear of moving disappear and the adventure of a new life near the mountains, begin.
John pulled out his cell phone and found hundreds of pictures of the mountain on the internet.  People on top, people hiking, and even people inside a building signing a book, on top of the mountain.
“A lot of people must love Mt. Whitney.” said Lucas.
John handed Lucas the phone, allowing him to scroll through the many different pictures.
To Lucas, the cell phone was HUGE, almost as long as his legs.  He loved it! The more pictures he saw of the mountain, the more excited he started to feel.
After a few minutes, Lucas was feeling much better.  When John was not looking, he quickly switched from the pictures on the phone, to his favorite bird game.
“Keep on flap-pin!” mumbled Lucas.
John pretended not to notice what Lucas was doing, he was just happy Lucas was finally back to his cheerful self again.
“What’s for breakfast?!” Lucas asked, trying to befuddle John from taking his phone with him.
John played along, standing up and walking towards the door, pretending to forget his phone.
“Thanks for reminding me, I will get the cereal out.” he said.
“Sounds good!” replied Lucas.
John finally left, leaving Lucas to flap to his heart’s content.

2
 the dead bush

Right after breakfast, Lucas and Lucy were ready to go outside.  They would play in the backyard, then go to the park, one last time before moving.
Lucas immediately ran out into the back yard as fast as he could, knowing no matter how fast he tried to run, Lucy and her long legs were right behind him.
Lucy followed him all the way to the garden shed where Lucas pulled out a shovel. She saw that the shovel was way too big for Lucas and his tiny little body.
“What do you need the shovel for?” asked Lucy.
“I am going to dig up that old bush I ruined last year.” Lucas replied, still trying to lift the heavy shovel.
“Why, it’s dead?” she asked.
“So I can fix it!” Lucas replied.
Lucy took the shovel from Lucas, trying to avoid an accident.
“How do you plan on fixing it, once you dig it up?” asked Lucy.
“I will figure it out.” he replied. “If I can kill it, just by touching it.  Maybe there is a way I can fix it someday.”
Lucy was ready to go to the park, and forget this dead little bush. Yet something inside her wanted to help Lucas dig up this bush.  She walked over and carefully began to shovel a circle around the roots.
“Let me do it!” Lucas insisted.
Lucy stopped to take a short break.
“If I let you do it, we will never make it to the park before we leave.” she explained.
“My twin-sister Lucy, taller, stronger, and normal.” declared Lucas.
Lucy rolled her eyes and continued to dig up the dead bush.
“I am not as normal as you think!” she replied with a grin.
“At least you are not the size of a newborn, and you don’t have a terrible touch that kills plants and trees, instantly.” he replied.
“I can probably do that too if we are really twins, maybe it will only start after I turn twelve, or something.” Lucy replied.
Lucas gave her a goofy look.
“I wish I was like you!” said Lucas.
“A normal person would have friends!” stated Lucy.
“Homeschool is not the best place to make new friends.” Lucas replied.
Lucy wanted to talk about something else.  She finished digging up the roots and pulled the bush out of the ground.
“Let’s get this into the truck and have a race to the park!” she suggested.
“Do you think I am cursed?” asked Lucas.
“You are cursing me with this boring conversation!” Lucy insisted.
“I am sorry!” replied Lucas. “I think my temper is connected to this curse.” he explained.
Lucy started dragging the bush around the house towards the front yard.
“Many people all over the world, chop down trees and bushes on purpose.  Sometimes without any important reason.” she explained.
“That is dumb!” said Lucas.
“I think John is right, that you have a gift, and the key to using it for good, can only be found in your heart.” she explained.
“Why don’t you call him dad like I do?” asked Lucas.
“I do-sometimes.” said Lucy. “It’s just hard understand what adopted means.” replied Lucy.
“It means that we can stop dreaming and wishing for a real family.” explained Lucas.
Lucas and Lucy finally made it to the front of the house with the dead bush.  Before leaving for the park, Lucy turned to ask Lucas one last question.
“If you could wish for anything, what would it be?” she asked.
“I wish I could be a little taller!” Lucas quickly replied.
“Remember what Mom always says! Learn to be happy the way you are, and someday you will feel as tall as a tree!” said Lucy.
Lucas just smiled back at Lucy, before running towards the park.

trouble at the park

The park was empty when Lucy helped tiny Lucas up on one of the swings. when Lucas and Lucy arrived.  Lucy gave him a firm push into the air, and sat in the swing right next to him.
“Are you happy about moving?” she asked.
“Sure! Dad let me see a bunch of pictures of an awesome mountain, we will be able to see from the living room in our new house.” answered Lucas.
Lucas started kicking his legs, to make the swing go higher.
“Are you happy about moving?” he asked.
“I am happy for a fresh start!  Hopefully we can make friends and go to a public school for once.” she replied.
Lucy kicked her legs, trying to go higher than Lucas on the swing.
“Why do we need to move?” asked Lucas.
“Mom and dad are in the military!” Lucy replied. “John reports to the President of the United States,  I think he used to be a spy or something.”
“Why does he need to meet with the President?” asked Lucas.
Before Lucy could answer two boys came up behind them.
“Look Eddy, there is a talking baby on my swing, and his ugly big sister is on yours!” the shorter boy said laughing.
Lucy quickly jumped off of her swing and walked over to the taller boy named Eddy.  She made a very mad dog looking face.
“Was I on your swing?” she asked Eddy.
“I didn’t say anything!” Eddy replied.
He took a few steps back, running into his smaller friend.
“The park has four swings! Use the other one.” Lucy demanded.
Eddy was quietly walking towards another swing.  Lucy also turned to sit back on her swing, when the shorter bully pulled the swing out from under her.
Lucy fell hard on the sand.
That was it!  Lucas was now losing control of his temper.
“LEAVE MY SISTER ALONE!” he shouted.
Lucas carefully jumped off of his swing and ran over to the bully, pushing him as hard as he could.  He was just too small, and just bounced right back, almost falling.
“Get away from me, little Elf!” the bully shouted, throwing Lucas over to the lawn.
Lucas landed a few feet away and was grasping the blades of grass between his fingers.  He could feel it dying as his anger began altering the energy from the grass into pure darkness, removing all light.
Lucas shouted, as loud as he possibly could.
“STOP!”
The grass everywhere in the park, died in less than a second, causing every bird to immediately take off into the air. Even the wind came to a complete stop.
The bully took a few steps back, frightened,  as Eddy helped Lucy get back on her feet.
Lucy pushed him away and walked over to Lucas, to help him up.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
Lucas looked terrified.
Eddy went over to the bully and was about to yell at him for pushing Lucas, when he shouted.
“LOOK!”
Eddy stopped and turned to see what he was talking about.
He saw every tree and bush in the park losing its leaves, and dying.  Even the flowers and weeds started to wither and die.
“What’s happening?” Lucas asked Lucy.
“I’m not sure.” she replied.
Both of the other boys became so frightened about what was happening, they turned and ran home.
Lucy was not afraid.
“THAT IS AWESOME!” she shouted.
“No it was not!” replied Lucas.
He felt so guilty and sorry for losing his temper, he started running home as fast as he could to speak with John.
Before he could even make it half way across the park, he saw John running towards him.
“What happened?” John asked.
Lucas was breathing heavy and trying to speak.
“A bully was here and something very bad happened when I got angry!” Lucas explained.
“Everything is going to be just fine.  Just take deep breaths!” he insisted. “Try and stay calm!”
John took off his shoes and sox, before walking over to the largest oak tree in the park.  The leaves were quickly dying and falling to the ground.  He placed his hands on the trunk of the tree and buried his toes deep into the dirt near the base of the tree.
Suddenly, the wind began to blow much stronger than before, taking away every dead leaf and twig in the park.  The ground under the oak tree began to move as fresh branches and leaves began to grow, more beautiful than before.
All of the birds returned, flying in circles around the park as all of the other trees began recovering as well.
The park was soon green and fresh, better than it was before.  The grass returned thick and dark green, growing even taller than Lucas.
Lucy lifted Lucas off the ground before he disappeared in the grass.
“Did you know dad could do that?” she asked. “How is that possible?”
Lucas just watched with his mouth wide open.

Chapter
4
we are the fern’s

Tali (short name for Talitha) Fern, the wife of John, was driving the family to their new home.  Lucy read her book snuggled under blankets and pillows, as Lucas was still thinking about what happened an hour earlier at the park.
John was in the front seat of the car, listening to classical music.
“Dad!” Lucas called.
John turned around, smirking, as if he knew exactly what Lucas was going to ask.
“Why didn’t you tell me before, that you are like me?” asked Lucas.
Lucy put her book up to her face pretending not to listen, when she was in fact, eavesdropping.
Tali looked over at John with a grin.
“Go ahead!” she said, “It’s time they know a little more about what it means to be a Fern.”
John looked at Lucas, right in the eyes, more intense than ever before.
“We were waiting for the two of you to be mature enough, before letting you know!” he said.
“Go on!” demanded Lucas.
“The hardest part for the two of you to believe is, your mother and I are over 2,000 years old.  I was made ‘Keeper of Earth, back when I was in my twenties.” he explained.
Lucy was not hiding behind her book anymore.  Her eyes, and mouth were now wide open in shock.
Lucas was a little uneasy.  It took him a few moments to think of his next question.
“Can Mom do anything weird?” Lucy interrupted.
John grinned, then looked over at Tali. She was also listening, but watching the road as she drove the car.
“Your Mom has a gift we may not speak about here!” he replied.  “We will explain later, when we are at the Temple garden.”
Lucas was beginning to feel hope.
“What is the Temple Garden?” he asked.
“It is where we can meet under the protection of nature’s mightiest warriors.” John replied.
Lucas opened his eyes, really big, and looked over at Lucy.  She was still in shock.
“Who are these warriors?” asked Lucas.
“They are the Giant Sequoias, with the ‘Grizzly Giant’ as their leader.” he explained.
Lucas was still feeling confused. “How can a tree become a warrior?” he asked.
“When you see this tree, you will understand.” said John. “I planted the ‘Grizzly Giant’ a very long time ago.”
“When can we go? How far away is it?” asked Lucas.
“Slow down, big guy!” replied John. “We need to unpack first.”
“How do you communicate with them?” he asked.
John smiled.
“Every living organism on Earth is connected, at all times.” he explained. “We communicate with plants and trees, through our thoughts and energy.”
“Do trees speak English?” asked Lucy.
“They can understand your thoughts, by your energy and light.  If you are good, and full of light, organisms will respond in a good way.  If you are angry or full of bad energy, they will respond in a bad way.”
Lucas was beginning to understand what happened at the park, when everything began to die.
“You mean, my anger at the Park, caused all of that damage?” asked Lucas.
“Exactly!” John replied.
“Do you think I can bring back the life of the dead bush, if I am full of good energy?” he asked.
John paused, deep in thought.  “I think eventually, you will bring more good energy and life to this world, than I ever could.” he replied.
Lucas instantly felt relieved.
“Can I try it now?” he asked.
“You still have a bunch of negative energy to eliminate, before you will be ready.” replied John.
“Does that mean that I am a bad person?” asked Lucas.
“No, you just need some time to process your anger, fighting through the darkness, until you find your inner light.” he explained. “Everyone has darkness and light, inside them.  Most people are controlled by one or the other.  You will never get rid of darkness, since Light cannot exist without it.  You must learn to find control and a balance between the two.”
“Can I start now?” asked Lucas.
John smiled.
“You already started!” he said. “Some people die before ever learning the balance.  I will take you to Grizzly Giant, where you can speed up the process.”
“When?” asked Lucas.
Lucy was beginning to feel left out.
“I am a Fern too! Why can’t I learn?” she asked.
John turned all the way around in the front seat of the car, looking at Lucy.
“Your gift, like your mother deals with animals, not plants.” he replied.  “You will learn more, during our trip to the Temple Garden.”
This was new to Lucy and Lucas.  They had no idea.
The more Lucy  thought about it, the more she started putting the past together.
“We have never been to the zoo, or had any pets, because I might hurt them like Lucas hurt the trees at the park?” she asked.
“Correct!” replied John.
He passed coloring books back to Lucas, and some colors to Lucy.
“That is enough information for now.  It’s time you both relax your mind, and later we can explain more.” he said.
Lucas had a million more questions, and the possibilities caused his brain to quickly run out of energy, he fell fast asleep, a few minutes later.
Lucy was back under her blankets, full of emotion.  I am a mutant! she thought to herself.  How many animals have I hurt?  Her mind was also full of a million questions.
“Lucy!” Tali called.
“Yes, Mom.” Lucy replied, pulling the blanket off of her head.
“John said, we should stop by the animal habitat in Las Vegas.” she said.
Lucy struggled to focus, still feeling confused about her gift.  She did not know yet if she was happy to be a Fern now, or Sad.
“That would fine!” she replied.
“Just fine?” Tali asked. “You love animals more than any other kid I know.”
Lucy smiled.
“You’re right! I WOULD LOVE IT!”
“We will only stop by quickly to get a good look at the new Giraffe, and maybe a few other animals, from outside the park.  We would stay longer, but we still have another four or five hours, until we are home.” she explained.
It was not long after, Lucy saw the sign on the road.  It read:  2 miles to the Zoo, 10 miles to the Army Base.
“I see the sign!” cried Lucy.
Her yelling woke up Lucas and John.
“Are we there yet?” asked John.
“No, we are just getting close to the habitat!” replied Tali.
A few minutes later the zoo came into view and Lucas took off his seat belt, standing up in the car, trying to get a better view.
“I see it!” cried Lucas.
“Hey, big guy!” replied John. “Keep your seatbelt on!”
Lucas remembered the rules and sat back in his car seat, clicking his seat belt back on.
“I can’t see very good from here!” he whined.
“Don’t worry!” replied John.  “We will get out in just a minute, and you will see just fine.”
Lucy was still in her seatbelt, only she was sitting on her knees, also trying to see better.
“I see it too!” she shouted.
Tali finally pulled the car over to the curb and stopped.
“I will wait, and drive around the block a few times, so we don’t get a parking ticket” she said.  “You guys will go with John and take a few cool pictures.”
“I will take a thousand!” replied Lucy.
A few moments later, Lucy took the best picture of a giraffe drinking water!

mt. whitney

Lucy woke up after taking a two hour nap, and was tired of being in the car.  She noticed, they were still driving in the middle of the desert, only surrounded by huge mountains.
She touched the window to feel the temperature outside, and it was HOT!
“Where are we now?” asked Lucy.
John pointed out the window next to Lucas, at the really high mountains in the distance.
“The tallest mountain over there is Mt. Whitney!” he explained.
“That means we are close!” Lucas said.
Lucy rubbed her eyes to get a better look.  Lucas already had the camera out taking pictures.
“I don’t think we are close, I can’t see any buildings or houses.” she replied.
Lucas ignored her observation.
“One of these days, John and I are going to the top of Mt. Whitney!” he said.
“I am not a mountain person!” she replied.
John noticed a bit of cranky in Lucy’s reply, so he thought of a distraction.
“Mt. Whitney is the tallest peak in the Contiguous United States.” John explained.
Lucy started laughing, while Lucas tried to figure out why.
“What are you laughing for?” he asked.
Lucy giggled a little longer.
“I did not know the United States could be contagious!” she replied.
“Contiguous, not contagious!” John clarified.
“What’s the difference?” asked Lucy.
“Contagious means infectious, and Contiguous means connecting, as in the 48 connecting states, not including Alaska and Hawaii.” explained John.
“That is cool!” replied Lucas.
Lucas turned and started taking  a few pictures of the mountain, using John’s cell phone.  All he could think about was the view from his new bedroom, and his trip to see the Grizzly Giant.
“Is that where the Grizzly Giant lives? he asked.
“No.” replied John. “He lives in the Mariposa Grove, deep in the high sierra mountains.”
“In Yosemite!” added Tali.
“We are going to Yosemite!”
“Yes, we are going to camp there!” replied Tali.
Lucy was not very excited about camping.
“When?”  she asked.
“In two weeks!” replied Tali.
Lucy was feeling a little frustrated.  She had never been camping before, and she did not know what to expect.
Lucas started taking more pictures and humming a happy tune at the same time.
“You are going to waste the memory on dad’s phone!” warned Lucy.
“You took more at the zoo, than I have!” he replied.
Once again John was beginning to sense a little friction between the twins as they sat together during this past eight hours.
“I will give a prize to the first person to spot an Air Force, fighter jet.” he challenged.
“FIGHTER JETS, HERE!” shouted Lucas.
Even Lucy felt excited, and was looking out her window, in every direction.
“I can’t see any!” said Lucas.
“I bet we can hear one if we put down the windows.” replied John.
Tali pushed all four buttons on her door, lowering all of the windows.
A thick and heavy heat came quickly into the car, pushing out all of the cold air.
“Woah, that is hot!” cried Lucy. “It must be over 100 degrees outside.”
“I think it feels good.” replied Lucas.
“This is Death Valley National Park.” explained John. “The car reads 112 degrees outside.”
“Are we REALLY living somewhere, close to this place?” asked Lucy.
“We are just driving through” said John. “Death Valley will not hurt you unless we are unprepared.”
“Are we prepared?” she asked.
“Yes!” replied John. “NOW, are you both ready for more history?” he asked, pulling out a pack of sugar-free bubble gum.
Lucas quickly put a piece of gum in his mouth.
“I am ready!” he replied.
Lucy sniffed her piece. “I love the smell of this gum!” she said, pulling off the wrapper.
Tali put the windows back up, in order to turn the cold air back on.
As soon as both of the kids were ready to listen, John continued:
“Death valley is famous as the hottest, driest, and lowest place in North America, and it is 282 feet below sea level.”
“Will it be this hot where we are going to live?” asked Lucy.
John smiled.
“It will be hot, but not this hot!” he explained “We will be much higher, and I forgot to tell you, that we will be living near the oldest trees in the world.”

the old hara tree

“I knew it!” said Lucy, as she opened the car door to get out.
“What?” asked Lucas.
“It is just like Death Valley here!” she whined.
Lucas had a little bottle of water and was drinking as fast as he could.
“It is just like our old home in Arizona!” he replied.
John opened the car trunk and removed the suit cases and bags.
Tali went right towards the front door.
“Let’s put our things in the house, and dad will take you out for a hike” she said. “I will get dinner and our beds ready, before you are back.”
“Sounds good to me!” replied Lucas.
Lucy noticed several Army soldiers, walking across the street, a few blocks away.  She also noticed a tall fence surrounding the entire town.
“Is this some kind of Army base?” she asked.
Lucas stood very still, looking around, realizing how cool the town really was.
“COOL!” he replied.  “Why are there soldiers here?”
John turned to answer.
“We will meet one of them, when we are back from the hike! I will explain a little later.”
“LET’S GO THEN!” shouted Lucas, as he began to run down the street.
“WRONG WAY!” Tali shouted.
Lucas did not get very far, with his tiny legs, no matter how fast he ran.  He just stopped and turned around grinning.
“Where’s the trail?” he asked.
Everyone started laughing.
John quickly took the bags inside the house, returning with a backpack, and some water.
The three of them were off, hiking up the trail.
“How far are we going?” asked Lucy.
“About two miles!” replied John. “we are going all the way over to the ‘Old Hara’ tree.”
“Is that the oldest tree?” she asked.
“The oldest in the entire world!” John answered, warmly.
Lucas was walking as fast as his tiny legs could go, even running at times.
“I can’t believe we live so close!” he said, trying to catch his breath.
Lucy began to worry about him.
“Can you carry Lucas?” she asked John.
“I thought he was doing great!” he replied.
John was enjoying his slow and steady stroll on the trail, but he was also had another reason for leaving Lucas on his own.
Lucy did not agree.
“Can you just carry him?” she asked.
John grinned, then set his hand by his side, signaling to Lucas. Lucas was more than happy to take it. John immediately pulled Lucas up to his shoulders.
“I wish you could carry me too!” Lucy gasped.
“We are almost there!” replied John.
John was wearing a baseball hat, and Lucas was holding on to his ears.
“How old are the trees?” he asked.
“Over five thousand years old.” replied John.
John noticed Lucy was letting the backpack drag on the ground.
“Can I carry the backpack for you?” he asked.
Lucy did not notice the backpack was still open as she turned to hand it to John.
“Sure!” she replied.
Two of the water bottles flew over the edge of the trail, exploding as they landed on a rock.
“Oops!” muttered Lucy. “We still have one that we can share.”
“Great job!” said Lucas.
“It’s no big deal!” replied John. “We have many natural springs of water here.”
John set Lucas down on the trail, and climbed down to pick up the broken bottles.
As soon as he was back on the trail, he lifted Lucas back over his shoulders.  "We are almost there!” said John, as he started hiking once again. “I know of a stream, just ahead, under the Old Hara tree.  We can find more water up there!”
Lucy opened up the last water bottle and Lucas watched her drink the entire bottle.
“I wanted some!” he said.
John pulled a lemon drop out of his pocket and passed it up to Lucas.
“This will keep your mouth busy until we get there!”
“Thanks!”
Lucy watched Lucas put the lemon drop in his tiny mouth.  For a normal size person, the lemon drop would be much smaller, but Lucas could not even close his lips.
“Don’t drool on John’s hat!” she giggled.
John pulled another lemon drop out of his pocket, and handed it to Lucy.
“Keep walking!” he demanded, calmly.
“Thanks, I love these!” she replied.
The tree was just a few yards ahead.
“There she is!” said John. “My old friend!”
“She does look old!” said Lucas.
“That is a negative comment, and it gives negative energy!” replied Lucy.
John did not hear either of them.  He set Lucas back on the ground, suddenly more interested in something behind the tree.
He took off his shoes and sox, and started removing rocks, placing one of his hands over the largest branch near the trunk, and buried his toes deep into the ground.
The tree immediately started to move, causing both of the kids to back up, almost frightened. The roots started slithering in and out of the dirt, until a large opening in the ground appeared.
Lucy stood closer to Lucas.
“That’s creepy!” she whispered.
The two largest branches began to lift high into the air, as if it were a pair of arms catching a baseball.
New leaves and branches began to grow, just like at the park.
“I FOUND IT!” John called. “Can you bring me the empty water bottle?”
Lucy walked over, and give it to John.
John reached way down inside the large opening, under the tree trunk, returning with a full bottle of dirty looking water.
“This is for you!” he said, holding the bottle out.
Lucy looked over at Lucas.
“I think he’s talking to you!” she said.
Lucas made a goofy face.
“I’m not thirsty, anymore!” he replied.
Soon, John standing in front of Lucas.
“It will taste great!” he said, taking the bottle and putting it inside the backpack.
“Old Hara, is the Mother of all trees on Earth.” he explained.
Lucas was immediately impressed.  He took out John’s phone and took a few pictures.
“It’s a good thing you are here to keep her alive!” Lucas said, trying to take the perfect picture.
As soon as Lucas was finished, John started hiking down the trail, towards the house.  This time he did not carry Lucas on purpose.  He wanted Lucas to drink the water he took from under the tree, knowing the special changes it would bring.
John waived at both of the kids to keep up. “Follow me! BOY AM I READY FOR DINNER!” he shouted.
Half way back to the house, Lucas was running out of breath, trying to keep up with Lucy and John.
“I am ready, for some, of that water!” he huffed.
John stopped walking and removed the bottle of water from the backpack, handing it to Lucas.
“Are you sure it’s safe?” he asked.
John stood there grinning, curiously.
“It is better for you, than any other water in the world!” he replied.
Lucas slowly twisted the lid off and smelled the water.  It smelled just fine.  Without another thought, he quickly gulped down all of the water.
John had the biggest smile on his face.  He must have known, what was about to happen to Lucas.
